On our search for fun, artistic and inspirational apps for little children we stumbled across a new design gem called this monster: creatures that love color. Developed and designed by former MoMA graphic designer and art director Julianna Goodman it is all about colour, texture and creativity. The app consists of three different activities: (1) colour eater is a monster that wants to be fed with colours, all in form of a rhyming interactive tale. (2) monster pretend! introduces quirky characters like a jumping jackelope, a musical mermaid and a polka dot painter. (3) monster get dressed! asks players to choose a monster and dress it up to take a shareable foto at the end. What makes this monster: creatures that love color really special is the emphasis on the handmade. It incorporates all kinds of „visual textures“ like paper, felt, cloth facbric, puff balls and feathers which add a layer of a new, hybrid, digital-textile experience. Vanaf 25 februari 2015 is namelijk in het Museum of the City of New York en tentoonstelling te zien over het oeuvre van designlegende Paul Rand. De titel is “Everything is Design. The work of Paul Rand”, en een citaat van Rand zelf is daarbij titel en leidraad: “Everything is design. Everything!” In de tentoonstelling zal dan ook alles, het hele spectrum van zijn werk, te zien zijn. Naast magazine covers voor design en fashion magazines zoals Idea en Apparel Arts en het anti-fascistisch culturele magazine Direction zijn ook kinderboeken en reclame te zien. Evenals branding en re-branding projecten zoals bij voorbeeld voor IBM. In totaal meer dan 150 reclames, posters, corporate brochures en boeken! Rand was dé sleutelfiguur als het gaat om het opnemen van verschillende Europese Avantgarde stromingen in de wereld van de Amerikaanse grafische vormgeving. Hello English! Little I-Am-Me (original title „„Das kleine Ich bin Ich“) is an Austrian children´s book classic by Mira Lobe (text) and Susi Weigel (idea and illustration). Since 2014 it is translated into English language. Originally published in 1972 it gave distinctive memories to many generations of children in Austria and Germany but also in other countries. That is thanks to translations into manifold other languages, under which Chinese and Japanese. It tells the timeless story of a small, multicolored beastie, with long drooping ears, pink checkered body and long colored tail. Happy and satisfied it suddenly meets a frog who wants to know what kind of animal it is. The little I-am-me does not know an answer to that question and starts a search for its own identity. Bigplic et Miniploc

Magic illustrations Bigplic et Miniploc is a playful and beautifully designed game/ i-pad / i-phone app for toddlers (+2) and older children. One of our MAKI minimag favorites for a long time already!   Shapes and Colours: The creative mastermind behind Bigplic et Miniploc is French designer Céline Vernier and her playful design studio Pepillo. It is based on the idea of combining basic shapes and basic colours: circles, rectangles, triangles AND  red, blue and yellow.  The game starts as a puzzle: you have to drag and drop the  forms to the matching outlines. When you are ready with dragging and dropping the picture will be finished. And you will her some APPLAUSE (really nice audio :)) Get creative yourself:  When you have completed the picture, all it´s elements are provided on the bottom of your digital playground. So you get extra  building blocks and you can start to make your own illustrations, create, build, expand, …..and give it your own form. ↓ Scroll down for English/German version! I know a lot of things is een prentenboek van de Amerikaanse graphic designer Paul Rand en Ann Rand, zijn vrouw. Paul Rand staat het meest bekend om zijn corporate identities/logo´s zoals die van IBM, ABC of UPS. Het boek is het eerste van vier kinderboeken, die Ann en Paul Rand samen ontworpen hebben. Oorspronkelijk uitgegeven in 1956 werd het in 2009 door Chronicle Books heruitgegeven. Typisch voor Paul Rand’s illustraties zijn de uit papier geknipte grafische vormen. In feite was het knippen van gekleurd papier een van zijn favorite methodes in de jaren 50. Het verhaal, geschreven door Ann Rand, is vol humor en “rhythm and rhyme”. Het helpt kleine kinderen zich te realiseren, dat ze al een heleboel dingen weten. Of het nou kleine of grote dingen zijn. Like this:Like Loading…

↓ Scroll down for English/German version! De Italiaanse ontwerpster Flavia Ruotolo heeft in haar boek Zoo van gekleurde bouwstenen een kleine, grafische dierentuin samengesteld. Met de namen van de beesten in het Frans, Italiaans, Engels, Spaans en Duits erbij. Kleine taalcursus inclusief  dus:) Het boek is al langer een van ons absolute lievelingsboeken. Bijzonder grappig en origineel: het zijn niet allemaal de typische, bekende diersoorten, maar wat ongewonere vrienden, zoals een stekelvarken (porc-épic in het Frans), een cicade (cigale), een leguaan (iguane) of een stinkdier (moufette). Hier & Da (Hier & Daar, in het origineel: Bon voyage!)  is en mooi, klein en heel fijn getekend boek van de franse kunstenaar, architect en designer Didier Cornille en uitgegeven door Hélium Édition.  Een boek en kunstobject tegelijkertijd, met een blauwe snee (=boven, zij en onderkant) en titels van hoofdstukken gedrukt op afwisselend blauw, geel of rood.  Inhoudelijk is het een speel met getallen, vormen en kleuren, humoristisch en verassend.
