I know a lot of things is een prentenboek van de Amerikaanse graphic designer Paul Rand en Ann Rand, zijn vrouw. Paul Rand staat het meest bekend om zijn corporate identities/logo´s zoals die van IBM, ABC of UPS.
Het boek is het eerste van vier kinderboeken, die Ann en Paul Rand samen ontworpen hebben. Oorspronkelijk uitgegeven in 1956 werd het in 2009 door Chronicle Books heruitgegeven. Typisch voor Paul Rand’s illustraties zijn de uit papier geknipte grafische vormen. In feite was het knippen van gekleurd papier een van zijn favorite methodes in de jaren 50. Het verhaal, geschreven door Ann Rand, is vol humor en “rhythm and rhyme”. Het helpt kleine kinderen zich te realiseren, dat ze al een heleboel dingen weten. Of het nou kleine of grote dingen zijn.
Witte vlakken zijn een sleutelelement in Rand´s werk, en spelen in het kinderboek een belangrijke rol als onderdeel van de compositie. Net als de felle kleuren. De typografie (lettertype hier is de BodoniClassic) en de illustraties smelten op sommige pagina in elkaar. In hun combinatie zijn ze vermakelijk en licht, speels en filosofisch tegelijker tijd. En wat wij bijna het allerleukst vinden is die focus op de hele kleine dingen in het leven, die het zo bijzonder en eenmalig maken.

The book “I know a lot of things” is the first of four children books the couple did together. Originally published in 1956 the book has been re-edited in 2009 by Chronicle Books. Typical for Paul Rands illustrations are the paper cut graphic forms. In fact, cutting up colored paper was one of his favorite professions during the 50ies. The story, written by Ann Rand, is full of humor and “rhythm and rhyme”. It helps small children (and their parents:) to realize how much they already know. No matter if its small or big things.
White space, a key element of Rand´s work, plays an important role here too. As well as the bold colors
Typography (the typeset is BodoniClassic) and illustrations on some pages literally melt into one another. In their combination they are fun and light, playful and philosophical at the same time. And, what we love even most, they focus on this very small things in life, that make it so special and unique.
