MAKI:minimag_MOMA Art Lab App

MOMA Art Lab app

Do you know MOMA Art Lab already?  This app is designed for children in collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art. In our opinion it is a great app to explore new technologies even with small kids in an open, creative and playful way. So for example get creative and use the MoMA Art Lab app to create a sound composition, a shape poem, a group drawing, and more, then save and share your artwork (parental setting available). This sort of digital play is a great way for families to learn about art, discover artists’ processes and inspirations, and spend time together. Or use the “Activities” module to explore works of modern art from the museums collection (Henri Matisse, Elizabeth Murray, Jean (Hans) Arp and many others). Each activity shows the work of art, explains the artist’s process, and then provides a way for kids to make their own artwork based on the style of the inspiration piece. There is even an audio feature that allows pre-readers to have the text read to them. This app is  great …

“Têtes, Bêtes, Lettres” . game by Pepillo

A happy girl, a mister wearing a moustache, a sun, a walking R…these and lots of more figures never looked more charming and fun than when assembled with the lovely iPad-app “Têtes, Bêtes, Lettres” by Pepillo. Illustrator Celine Vernier designed it as a follow-up to the book/game” Têtes, Bêtes, Lettres”, a sticker booklet edited by Helium. Simple graphic elements that can be combined to build little universes, plays of words, letter characters. Super original, super beautiful, super simple!        Like this:Like Loading…

Tactile poetry

“Press Here”, that is a super imaginative and interactive children´s book by Hervé Tullet, published in 2011. The app is based on the book, but Herve Tullet did not want it to be a copy oft he book, but different and innovative, a kind of ‘tactile poetry’, as he called it. The app is designed for younger children up to the age of 10. It includes 15 tactile and creative activities with perfectly pitched colors, graphics, music and sound effects. It is all about brightly winking, blinking, multiplying, and colliding dots. Some activities are quite basic, as with the “Press Here” page, where you create and tilt dots and watch them spill. Others call for more critical thinking. And some, like the one where the dots eat one another, are pure fun. “Press Here”, das ist ein super einfallsreiches und interaktives Kinderbuch von Hervé Tullet, aus dem Jahr 2011. Die App hat das Buch als Ausgangspunkt, Tullet wollte aber bewusst keine Kopie machen, sondern etwas anderes, innovatives, eine Art „taktile Poesie“, wie er es nennt. Die …

this monster – creatures that love color

On our search for fun, artistic and inspirational apps for little children we stumbled across a new design gem called this monster: creatures that love color. Developed and designed by former MoMA graphic designer and art director Julianna Goodman it is all about colour, texture and creativity. The app consists of three different activities: (1) colour eater is a monster that wants to be fed with colours, all in form of a rhyming interactive tale. (2) monster pretend! introduces quirky characters like a jumping jackelope, a musical mermaid and a polka dot painter. (3) monster get dressed! asks players to choose a monster and dress it up to take a shareable foto at the end. What makes this monster: creatures that love color really special is the emphasis on the handmade. It incorporates all kinds of „visual textures“ like paper, felt, cloth facbric, puff balls and feathers which add a layer of a new, hybrid, digital-textile experience. That makes it easy to relate to for kids. And will hopefully inspire children and parents to continue playing the game in real …

Bigplic et Miniploc

Magic illustrations Bigplic et Miniploc is a playful and beautifully designed game/ i-pad / i-phone app for toddlers (+2) and older children. One of our MAKI minimag favorites for a long time already!   Shapes and Colours: The creative mastermind behind Bigplic et Miniploc is French designer Céline Vernier and her playful design studio Pepillo. It is based on the idea of combining basic shapes and basic colours: circles, rectangles, triangles AND  red, blue and yellow.  The game starts as a puzzle: you have to drag and drop the  forms to the matching outlines. When you are ready with dragging and dropping the picture will be finished. And you will her some APPLAUSE (really nice audio :)) Get creative yourself:  When you have completed the picture, all it´s elements are provided on the bottom of your digital playground. So you get extra  building blocks and you can start to make your own illustrations, create, build, expand, …..and give it your own form. Share it with others: When your illustration is ready you can share it via Social Media or e-mail and send it to family and friends. This is a …
