“Everything is design. Everything!” Ha, hoe ik al die mensen benijd die in New York wonen of daar binnenkort naartoe gaan! Vanaf 25 februari 2015 is namelijk in het Museum of the City of New York en tentoonstelling te zien over het oeuvre van designlegende Paul Rand. De titel is “Everything is Design. The work of Paul Rand”, en een citaat van Rand zelf is daarbij titel en leidraad: “Everything is design. Everything!”
In de tentoonstelling zal dan ook alles, het hele spectrum van zijn werk, te zien zijn. Naast magazine covers voor design en fashion magazines zoals Idea en Apparel Arts en het anti-fascistisch culturele magazine Direction zijn ook kinderboeken en reclame te zien. Evenals branding en re-branding projecten zoals bij voorbeeld voor IBM. In totaal meer dan 150 reclames, posters, corporate brochures en boeken!
Rand was dé sleutelfiguur als het gaat om het opnemen van verschillende Europese Avantgarde stromingen in de wereld van de Amerikaanse grafische vormgeving. Hij keek naar het Kubisme, Constructivisme, De Stijl, Bauhaus, het hele Europese Modernisme om inspiratie op te doen en een heel vernieuwende, individuele toegang tot visuele communicatie te ontwikkelen. Altijd met het centrale idee dat kunst en design eens (kunnen en moeten) zijn. Verder was zijn filosofie (die hij in zijn werk en talrijke theoretische boeken zoals Thoughts on Design van 1947) tot uiting bracht, dat visuele communicatie form en functie moet integreren!

Hello English! Oh, how much I envy people that live in New York or are travelling there soon! On February 25, 2015 an exhibition focussing on the oeuvre of design legend Paul Rand opens at the Museum of the City of New York. “Everything is Design. The work of Paul Rand” is the title of the show and a famous quote by Rand is title and leitmotif: “Everything is design. Everything!”
In the exhibition everything, the whole spectrum of his work that is, will be on show. Besides magazine covers for design and fashion magazines such as Idea and Apparel Arts and the anti-fascist cultural magazine Direction there will also be his children books and advertising. Just as his famous branding and re-branding projects such as for IBM. In total more than 150 advertisements, posters, corporate brochures and books!
Rand has been a key figure when it comes to the integration of different European Avantgarde movements to American graphic design. He got inspiration from Cubism, Constructivism, De Stijl, Bauhaus, the whole European Modernism and translated those influences into an innovative and individual approach to visual communication. Always with the strong notion that art and design are (can and have to be) unified. Furthermore his philosophy (that can be found in his work and different theoretical books such as Thoughts on Design of 1947) was based on the idea that visual language has to integrate form and function!

Hallo Deutsch! Oh, wie sehr ich die Menschen beneide, die in New York wohnen oder in nächster Zeit dorthin reisen! Am 25. Februar eröffnet eine Ausstellung über das Schaffen der Design-Legende Paul Rand im Museum of the City of New York. “Everything is Design. The work of Paul Rand” ist der Titel der Schau und ein berühmtes Zitat von Rand selber ist Titel und Roter Faden der Ausstellung: “Everything is design. Everything!”
In der Ausstellung ist dann auch alles, das ganze Spektrum seiner Arbeit zu sehen. Neben Titelseiten für Design und Mode Magazine sowie Idea und Apparel Art und die antifaschistische kulturelle Zeitschrift Direction werden auch seine Kinderbücher und Reklameprojekte zu sehen sein. Und natürlich seine berühmten Branding und Re-Branding Arbeiten sowie zum Beispiel für IBM. Im ganzen mehr als 150 Inserate, Poster, Corporate Brochures und Bücher!
Rand war eine Schlüsselfigur was das Integrieren von verschiedenen Europäischen Avantgarde-Strömungen in die Welt des Amerikanischen Grafik Designs betrifft. Er liess sich von Kubismus, Konstruktivismus, De Stijl, Bauhaus, allen europäischen Modernismen inspirieren und übersetzte die verschiedenen Einflüsse in eine innovatieve, individuelle Form visueller Kommunikation. Immer mit der zentralen Idee, dass Kunst und Design eine Einheit sind (sein können und müssen). Weiters basierte seine Philosophie (die sich in seiner Arbeit ebenso findet wie in zahlreichen theoretischen Werken sowie dem Buch Thoughts on Design von 1947) auf dem Grundsatz, dass visuelle Kommunikation Form und Funktion zusammenbringen muss!
